Effortless Waves

Creating Effortless Waves........

Effortless waves are one of the newest and hottest trends, characterized by a tousled, messy, undone, “just woke up” boho wave, looking both effortless and beautiful.  While some girls are lucky enough to wake up with that look (often depending on their hair type), for most people, this look takes a little bit of effort.  Here we discuss 5 quick and easy steps to make that look your own.

Step 1:  after washing, towel-dry hair and add a light styling product.  I like to use a volumizing mousse/styling cream with light to medium hold.

Step 2: Blow-dry using fingers (no brush) and flip the hair upside down to get more body at the roots.  It may already look somewhat tousled and messy once dry.  (Optional: Spray with light hairspray or heat protectant before step 3).

Step 3:  With a curling iron (anywhere from a 1 to 1.5” iron would work), grab random sections of hair and wrap it around the iron (the size of the sections should be variable).  The waves should be loose and non-uniform, it is best to alternate the direction you are wrapping the sections in (e.g. one section of hair you wrap towards your face and the next section you wrap away from your face).  You should also vary the time the hair stays around the iron.  The longer it stays wrapped, the tighter the wave will be.   Try wrapping only a portion of a hair section (e.g. just wrapping the middle of that section around the iron. If you do this make sure you do it randomly to keep that effortless look). Also, not every piece of hair needs to be curled, leave some sections natural.

Step 4:  Spray the roots with a dry shampoo.  This will give volume and grit to the hair style. Now run your fingers through your hair, separating the waves.

Step 5:  Spray a light hairspray or sea salt spray on your hair, scrunching the waves.  This should add texture and separation of the waves, giving it that “beachy” tousled look.

That’s it, now you have gorgeous effortless looking waves!

TIP: Keep the look longer! after you give yourself beautiful effortless waves try going a day or two without washing your hair.  Just touch up the waves with an iron (only if needed).  If desired, freshen up the roots with dry shampoo.
