The Transition From Acting On Stage to On Screen

In a recent article from Backstage actor, Philip Hernandez delves into the difference between acting on stage and on camera.

According to Hernandez, "The big difference between acting onstage and on camera has to do with distance. On camera, most of the time your scene partner isn’t more than a few feet away from you so you just talk with them like no one’s watching.
On stage, your physical choices have to communicate your intent to an audience that’s sitting 30, 40, 50 feet away or more. On camera, that’ll look like you’re trying to be understood in a busy bar at happy hour. It’s gonna be too big."

How does an actor make the transition from stage to screen? Here are a few pointers.
Act like you are having a private conversation with the camera like you are having a one on one with another person.
Also, the actor needs to "burn hot but be cool." Hernandez explains, "Your need has to burn hot inside you but you've gotta be cool outside because people rarely try to show you their feelings, instead, they try to hide them."

Hernandez encourages film actors transitioning to the stage "to find more physical ways to express their choices" rather than relying more on your voice.  The key is knowing the appropriate frame size you are in. Read more about the transition from stage to screen on Backstage!

Making a Demo Reel that Books the Job

Having trouble making a demo reel that stands out? Are you questioning what to put in and what to leave out when creating your reel? Backstage has published a great article giving actors advice on creating a demo reel that books you the job!

Showcase your best work
"Casting directors don't have time to waste. Other than your headshot, your reel may be the only thing they look at before deciding whether or not they want to bring you in, so it's crucial that your reel show off your skills and highlight the work you've done (or capable of doing).

What are some key qualities to include in your reel?
Acting teacher Paul Barry says, “A demo reel should highlight your most marketable qualities. It should be an honest representation of how you look, sound, and act right now. Footage that obscures any of these features—and old material—should be avoided at all costs.” He also notes that the sound and vision quality should be high, and the acting should be your best.

How much content should your reel include?
"Aim for a range of 4-5 clips, each 20-30 seconds long, with the total run time of the reel being three minutes max."

How long should your reel be?
"Opinions vary on the exact length, but as long as your reel is under three minutes (max!) and features two-to-five varying scenes that showcase your abilities, you're good. Acting coach Joseph Pearlman says, 'A good reel should be no longer than one-and-a-half minutes and start immediately; no 10-seconds holds your name against a blank screen - that just bores casting to tears and makes them impatient."
