From Audition to Callback: What to Expect in On-Camera Castings

Understanding the On-Camera Casting Process: A Comprehensive Audition Guide for Talent

Navigating the world of on-camera casting can seem daunting, especially if you're new to the industry or returning after a break. This TalentPlus audition guide will help you understand each step of the casting process, from receiving the casting notice from TalentPlus booking agents to the final decision-making. Here’s what you need to know.

RECEIVING A CASTING NOTICE

The casting process begins with receiving a casting notice via email. This notice will include essential details about the project, such as if the audition is going to be in person, a self-tape request or a remote audition and also its union status, how they are using the end product, role description, shoot dates, rate of pay and the due date.

Tips

  • Ensure your contact information with TalentPlus is up to date so you are receiving current on camera castings to the correct email address and phone number.
  • Regularly check your email and the casting platforms you’re registered with for audition requests. Check your spam or junk mailbox periodically in case an email audition slipped through the inbox. If you have a Yahoo or SBC Global or Juno email address, we see a lot of times email with a pdf attachment will go to your junkmail unless you make sure to mark the email address as not junkmail.
  • Both Actors Access and Casting Networks gives talent the option to opt into receiving text message alerts for audition requests, we recomend opting in to this service so you don't miss an audition opportunity.
  • Notify your booking agent at TalentPlus with any bookout dates you have. Shoots typically take place Monday-Friday so having your out of town or book out dates in place help with knowing if you are available for the opportunity.

UNDERSTANDING THE CASTING NOTICE

As a talent, your success in the industry hinges not just on your skills and performance, but also on your attention to detail and professionalism. One of the key elements that underscore these attributes is the ability to thoroughly read and comprehend casting audition notices.

Tips

  • Casting notices provide specific dates, times, and locations for auditions. Missing these details can result in arriving at the wrong time or place, which not only reflects poorly on you but also wastes opportunities and potentially damages your reputation.
  • Audition notices outlines the role's specifics, including character background and physical requirements. By comprehending these details, you can better prepare for the audition, tailoring your performance to fit the character and increasing your chances of standing out.
  • Casting notices often include wardrobe instructions. Showing up in the wrong attire can be a major setback, as it may distract from your performance or indicate a lack of preparation. Understanding these wardrobe requests in your audition memo ensures you present yourself appropriately.

RESPONDING TO CASTING NOTICES

It’s crucial to respond to the casting notice in a timely manner because there are potentially many people relying on your response. Quick responses are critical not only for maintaining professionalism but also for ensuring that you don't miss out on valuable opportunities. Here’s why timely responses matter and how they can impact your career.

  • Casting directors often operate on tight schedules and need to fill roles quickly. By responding promptly, you increase your chances of securing an audition slot. Delayed responses can lead to missed opportunities as roles are filled by other talent who were quicker to reply. This also allows the casting director to know whether you’re interested and available for the in person audition or if it is possible send a self-taped audition invite to you instaed if you are not in town for the in person audition.
  • If you are going out of town for a length of time, please let your agent know you need to book out so we can make a note that you are unavailable so we do not submit you for projects you are not available for.
  • Communicate any conflicts or concerns with your agent immediately. For example, if we have toy commercial casting that is expected to shoot one day between February 13th and 15th and you are only availble for two of the three prospected dates, you would inquire with us if you should audition or pass on the audition opportunity.

PREPARING FOR THE AUDITION

Once you’ve confirmed your participation, it’s time to prepare for the audition. This includes rehearsing your lines, understanding the character's role, and following any specific instructions given in the casting notice.

Tips

  • Practice in front of a camera to get comfortable with on-camera acting.
  • Dress appropriately for the character you’re auditioning for.
  • For self-taped auditions, make sure your recording setup meets industry standards—typically, this includes using a cell phone mounted on a tripod for stability.

PERFORMING THE AUDITION

Whether it’s a live audition or a self-tape, ensure you follow the instructions meticulously. This includes submission formats, deadlines, and any particular requirements mentioned.

Tips

  • Be punctual for live auditions.
  • Double-check your self-taped audition for quality and adherence to guidelines.
  • Be confident and showcase your unique interpretation of the character.

AFTER THE AUDITION

Once you’ve completed your audition, the casting director will send the auditions to the production team, marketing company, ad agency, or client for review. This review process determines who gets a callback or final booking decision. Be patient and avoid reaching out for feedback. Focus on your next audition or project.

UNDERSTANDING CASTING DECISIONS

Casting decisions involve several people, including the casting director, production team, and clients. Your agent will be notified if you are selected for a callback or booked for the project.

Tips

  • In the audition process, it's important to understand that while agents are notified if you’re officially booked for a project, we may not always receive updates if you are released from consideration. Generally, talent will be informed if they are being held for potential booking, have a callback request, or are officially booked.
  • It's standard practice that you may not hear back on every audition, so keep in mind that auditioning for a specific date does not guarantee you’re in active consideration. Rest assured, your agent will reach out to you directly if you are booked.
  • Understand that not receiving feedback is standard unless there are specific concerns.

RECEIVING FEEDBACK AND CASTING UPDATES

Typically, casting directors, ad agencies, marketing companies, and production teams do not provide feedback unless there are significant issues.

Tips

  • Accept that no news often means you were not selected.
  • Only expect feedback if there were notable issues with your audition.

CONCLUSION

The on-camera casting process involves multiple steps and numerous people making decisions. Trust your agent to keep you informed and focus on delivering your best performance at each audition. Remember, the journey to booking a role can be unpredictable, but understanding the process can help you navigate it with confidence.

The Importance of a Personality Slate for TalentPlus Actors and Models

The Importance of a Personality Slate for TalentPlus Actors and Models

At TalentPlus, we value authenticity and uniqueness, which is why we highly recommend a personality slate video for each of our talent. Unlike a traditional resume or portfolio, a personality slate offers clients a glimpse of the real you—who you are beyond the roles you've played or the projects you've worked on. This one-minute-and-fifteen-second video is your chance to introduce yourself, share a little about your personality, and let your energy shine through.

This isn't the time to recount your work history (clients can see your resume on our website), nor is it an audition. Instead, the goal is to let clients get a sense of your personality—how you speak, your presence, and your vibe. Think of it as a way to let them know who you are, not the characters you play.

Why Is A Personality Slate Important?

  • Showcasing Your Unique Energy - A personality slate helps clients understand your personal energy, which can help deciding if you're a good fit for their projects. For example, sports player introduction videos, especially in the NFL, have a rich history tied to the evolution of sports engagement & media. This format became prominent in the 1990s as part of TV broadcasts and stadium experiences to hype up fans before the game. Fans love these introductions because they personalize the players, making them more than just a number on the field. It adds a narrative element to the game, showing viewers the unique personalities, charisma, and swagger of each player. This builds excitement and anticipation, giving fans a deeper connection to the players and the game. Like sports intros, a TalentPlus personality slates offers clients a glimpse into the talent’s persona beyond the resume or portfolio. It humanizes them, builds a connection, and adds that "extra bit" that can make a difference in casting decisions. Clients, like fans, get excited about what a talent can bring to the table when they see the real person behind the headshot.

Key Tips for Your Personality Slate:

  • Be Yourself: Don’t feel the need to perform or put on a persona. The client is looking for the real you.
  • Keep It Natural: Talk about yourself in a relaxed, conversational way. Mention a few interesting things about your life or hobbies that reflect your true self.
  • Stay Positive: A warm, positive energy can go a long way. Smile and maintain good eye contact with the camera to make an engaging impression.
  • Keep It Brief: Stick to the time limit of about a minute and fifteen seconds.
  • Wardrobe: Solid colors are often best. Please avoid busy prints and obvious logos. Layers are fine. Avoid wearing a white top, as the wall you will be taped in front of is white/off white, and we don’t want you to blend in.
  • Appearance: Make sure to come camera-ready with simple makeup, hair, and wardrobe. Men, if you have facial ruddiness or blemishes, blend them out with a cosmetic product like Studio Fix by MAC Cosmetics. Women, please style your hair down, no ponytails.
  • Content: Be prepared with what you would like to chat about. Use this opportunity to showcase your personality, wit, spontaneity, interests, honors, and hobbies. Energy is important, so be well-rested and hydrated!
  • Post Production: TalentPlus will edit your slate, send a finished copy of the slate to you and upload it to your TalentPlus webpage under the 'Video' category.

Personality slates give you a platform to show your true self to potential clients and casting directors. Embrace this opportunity to shine in a way that goes beyond the projects you’ve been part of, and let your unique energy take center stage. We’re excited to see how you use this tool to elevate your presence and bookings!

Best Practices & Guidelines for Hand Models

Hand Modeling Tips: How to Keep Your Hands in Top Shape for Every Casting

As a hand model, your hands are the stars of the show. Whether you’re modeling for on-camera projects or print advertisements, maintaining impeccable hand and nail care is crucial. Here are some essential guidelines to ensure your hands are always camera-ready:

Nail & Hand Care

  • Avoid Press Ons and Gel Nails: While gel polish can give a beautiful and polished look, it can also leave long-lasting effects on the nails once removed, including thinning, peeling, and other visible damage. Since photographers capture highly detailed close-ups of your nails, even the smallest imperfections, including any effects from gel polish removal, are easily noticed. Clients prefer healthy, natural-looking nails that are free from any damage or marks. For this reason, it’s best to avoid wearing gel polish before any shoots. Instead, we recommend maintaining clean, well-manicured nails without the use of gel polish or other potentially damaging treatments, so your hands are in top condition for all close-up shots.
  • Nail Length: Keep your nails at a moderate active length. They should be long enough to look elegant but not so long that they appear artificial or interfere with the product you’re modeling.
  • Moisturize: Regularly moisturize your hands to keep the skin smooth and soft. This helps prevent dryness and cracking, ensuring your hands look their best. Keep your hands well-hydrated. Drink plenty of water and use a good quality hand cream.
  • Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Wear gloves when cleaning or doing dishes to protect your hands from harsh chemicals that can dry out your skin.
Preparing For A Hand Modeling Shoot
  • Follow Manicure Instructions: Make sure you follow the instructions provided by your agent on how your manicure should be done for your upcoming hand modeling shoot. Your agent will provide you with instructions including what kind of color, if any, for the nails, length of your nail and the nail shape.
  • Polish Touch-Ups: Bring your nail polish for touch-ups. This ensures your nails look freshly done throughout the shoot. Avoid strenuous activities with your hands before a shoot to prevent any potential injuries or strains.
  • How Reimbursement Works: Please keep your manicure receipt and turn it in at the conclusion of your shoot to your agent by emailing a copy of the manicure receipt. Your agent will let you know if you are being reimbursed through your session payment or on site.

Additional Tips

  • Notify us of any visible damage to hands: It’s important that you notify us of any visible damage to your hands, such as scars, scrapes, or other marks, during casting. This allows us to inform the client in advance and avoid any unexpected issues that could arise on set.
  • Avoid Heavy Jewelry: Unless specified by the client, avoid wearing heavy rings or bracelets that could leave indentations on your skin and that can take the attention away from your hands and nails.
  • Gentle Movements: Practice gentle and fluid movements with your hands. This is especially important for on-camera work where every motion is magnified. If you are modeling for a food product, it is crucial to know how to naturally and gracefully hold chopsticks, forks, and other cooking utensils, as clients often require these specific actions. Proper handling ensures your hands look comfortable and professional in every shot, enhancing the overall quality of the project.
  • Follow Client Instructions: Always adhere to specific instructions from the client regarding nail color, length, and overall hand appearance.

By following these guidelines, you can ensure that your hands remain in top condition and are always ready for their close-up. Remember, your hands are your canvas, and maintaining their beauty and health is key to a successful hand modeling career.

From Good to Great: Self-Taped Audition Techniques for TalentPlus Professionals

Mastering the Basics of Self-Taped Auditions: A Guide for TalentPlus Actors and Models

In the rapidly evolving world of acting and modeling, self-taped auditions have become an integral part of the casting process. At TalentPlus, we recognize the importance of presenting yourself professionally and adhering to guidelines to make a lasting impression. Whether you're an on-camera actor or a print model, mastering the basics of self-taped auditions is essential. Here's why following self-tape instructions meticulously can make all the difference.

The Importance of Following Casting Instructions

1. Demonstrates Professionalism: Casting directors and clients are looking for talent who can follow directions accurately. By sticking to the specified guidelines for your self-tape, you showcase your ability to take direction—an essential skill in any professional setting. It signals that you are reliable, detail-oriented, and easy to work with.

2. Ensures Fair Comparison: When all submissions adhere to the same format, it allows casting directors to evaluate talent on a level playing field. Variations in lighting, framing, or audio quality can distract from your performance and make it difficult for decision-makers to assess your true potential.

3. Highlights Your Commitment: Taking the time to follow instructions demonstrates your commitment to the role and the project. It shows that you value the opportunity and are willing to put in the effort to present yourself in the best possible light.

Key Elements of a Successful Self-Taped Audition

1. Technical Quality:

  • Lighting: Ensure your face is well-lit and clearly visible. Natural light is best, but soft, diffused artificial light can work well too. Avoid harsh shadows and backlighting. Talent should explore online resources to find affordable lighting kits for self-taped auditions. There are numerous options available to suit various budget levels.
  • Sound: Cell phones often work great for recording audio for self-taped auditions. However, it is crucial to ensure that the equipment you are using captures crips an clear sound. Use a good-quality microphone to ensure clear audio. Eliminate background noise and ensure your voice is the primary focus. If it's a voice over audition, take your phone into a closet and record your voice over audition without echos, your clothing will absorb noise bounce.
  • Framing: Follow the specified framing guidelines. Typically, a medium close-up (from the chest up) is preferred for acting auditions, while full-body shots are often required for modeling submissions.
    2. Background:
  • Keep It Simple: Use a plain, uncluttered background to keep the focus on you. A neutral color is ideal, as it minimizes distractions.
  • Be Mindful: When setting up your background for your self-taped audition, avoid messy home interiors, busy patterns and designs as this could be visually distracting to the casting director when viewing your audition. Be consious that you are not filming in front of a reflective surface that could cause glare. Take personal items out of the

3. Performance:

  • Preparation: Study the script or sides thoroughly. Understand the character or the product you are auditioning for, and prepare accordingly.
  • Delivery: Perform your lines naturally and confidently. Avoid overacting and ensure your delivery is aligned with the tone and style requested in the character description.
  • Eye Line: Maintain appropriate eye contact as specified. For most acting auditions, look slightly off-camera rather than directly into the lens.

4. Submission:

  • File Format: Follow the specified file format for your submission. Ensure the file size and type meet the requirements to avoid technical issues. If your audition file is too large, both Casting Networks and Actors Access will not accept it. Please keep in mind that many casting websites do not support .HEIC photo files from iPhone users. The format is still too new, the recomended image files are .jpeg and .png for castings.
  • Labeling: Label your files correctly. Each casting will have their own set up directions on how to label your audition. Often times you will be asked to label it with your name and the role or project you are auditioning for.
  • Punctuality: Submit your self-tape before the deadline. Late submissions can be a deal-breaker, regardless of the quality of your performance.

Final Thoughts

At TalentPlus, we are dedicated to helping you succeed in on-camera, voice over and print castings. By following these guidelines and paying close attention to the instructions for each self-taped audition you receive, you increase your chances of making a positive impression. Remember, the effort you put into your self-tape is a reflection of your professionalism and dedication.

Stay committed, stay prepared, and showcase your talent to its fullest potential. We believe in you and are here to support you every step of the way.

Boost Your Acting Career with Our Industry Standard Resume Template

Spotlight on Acting Resumes: How to Shine with an Industry-Standard Acting Resume

An actor’s resume is one of the most important tools for securing auditions and bookings. It showcases your experience, skills, and professional affiliations in a clear and concise format that industry professionals expect. To help our TalentPlus actors craft the perfect resume, we’ve outlined the key elements that should be included, along with a copy-and-paste resume format to ensure consistency and professionalism.

What to Include in Your Acting Resume

  • Name & Representation
    • Your name should be prominently displayed at the top of your resume.
    • If you are updating your resume for TalentPlus, do not include personal contact details such as your email or phone number. Instead, list TalentPlus' contact information.
  • Union Affiliation
    • Clearly state whether you are SAG-AFTRA, AEA, or non-union.
  • Acting Credits
    • Acting experience should be categorized into distinct sections: Film, Television, and New Media. Each section should be formatted with three columns:
      • Project Title (First Column)
      • Role Type (Second Column) – Use industry-standard terms like Co-Star, Guest Star, Principal, Lead, Supporting, etc.
      • Production Details (Third Column) – Include the director’s name, production company, or network.
  • Training
    • List any acting classes, workshops, or coaching received. Include the instructor’s name and location.
  • Special Skills
    • Specify any relevant skills such as dialects, musical instruments, dance styles, sports, stage combat, or any other unique abilities that might be useful for casting.

Commercial Conflicts Available Upon Request

When listing commercial experience on your resume, it’s best to use the phrase "Commercial conflicts available upon request" rather than historically detailing every commercial you've booked. This is because commercial contracts often include exclusivity clauses, meaning you may be restricted from working with competing brands for a certain period. However, even if a previous commercial is no longer running, listing it on your resume could still make a casting director assume there’s a conflict—potentially removing you from consideration for a new job unnecessarily. By keeping this information off your publicly shared resume, your agent can manage commercial conflicts on a case-by-case basis, ensuring you remain eligible for as many opportunities as possible.

Why Updating Your Casting Profiles Matters

Casting directors prioritize fresh and comprehensive profiles, including updated headshots and video content. An accurate representation of your current look and abilities is crucial to stand out in a competitive field. Here are key points to consider:

  • Media Matters: Profiles featuring video clips tend to attract more attention. Having on-camera performance clips can significantly enhance your chances of being cast.
  • Complete Profiles Get Priority: Casting directors are more likely to review profiles that are thorough and detailed. Ensure your profiles are fully filled out to increase your visibility.
  • Variety is Key: Include both theatrical and commercial headshots to showcase your versatility. Casting directors appreciate actors who can adapt to different roles. Keep it current, take down your outdated headshots that don’t correctly represent you.

Tips for Profile Enhancement

  • Headshots: Keep your theatrical and commercial headshots current. Casting directors prefer actors who regularly update their profiles, so avoid using the same headshot year after year.
  • On-Camera Performance Clips: If you lack previous project clips, consider adding contemporary theatrical monologues under one minute. Include both comedic and dramatic pieces to showcase your range. Using lesser-known pieces or character-driven monologues allows you to captivate the audience with your unique perspective, emotion, and depth. Knowing how to frame your monologues is key. Avoid using theatre performances because remember you are performing for the camera, not to a theatre audience.

Practices To Sidestep

Both Actors Access and Casting Networks may send you automated emails claiming you 'may be perfect for a role' and to self submit for their project. TalentPlus will submit you for consideration for on camera and print projects through both sites, talent are not asked to submit themselves and do not need to sign up for premium packages to submit themselves in these instances of being a perfect fit for a project because a lot of times these perfect fit opportunities can be non paying, volunteer or ultra low paying and not in your drivable area. Here are some news articles on casting sites and their comments on ‘pay for play’.

To control the amount of automated emails you get from Casting Networks you can go to Account Settings > Notification Settings > Project Type Alerts and you can deselect the types of projects that do not pertain to yourself, for example "Non Paying", "Reality TV" and "Game Show" are some types of castings we do not submit talent for on the casting sites.

In Actors Access, you can receive role match notifications, you can deselect these role match notifications in your talent account.

Laying Out Your Performance Media

When laying out your video media on both Actors Access and Casting Networks, talent should upload performance media categorized by the type of clip. For example, an actor who booked the role of a firefighter on Chicago Fire might use the following description for their performance media:

"Firefighter - Drama, a firefighter ignores orders from their captain and runs into a burning building."

By clearly labeling and organizing your clips, you make it easier for your agent to quickly identify and submit the most relevant footage for a given role. Agents often comb through multiple performances to find the best representation of your skills that align with a casting breakdown. Having your clips categorized effectively ensures that the right material is readily available, increasing your chances of being considered for the role.

Below are samples of how talent lay out their performance media.

By maintaining updated casting profiles and thoughtfully incorporating these key elements, you'll position yourself for greater visibility and success in the industry. A well-organized profile with clear, categorized media not only helps casting directors see your range but also allows your agent to quickly submit the most relevant clips for each opportunity. The more polished and strategic your profile is, the more effectively we can advocate for you.

We’re here to support you every step of the way, ensuring that your talent gets the recognition it deserves. Let’s maximize the potential of these casting platforms and open doors to exciting new roles that showcase your skills to the fullest.
